GB Women Mechellen Tournament June 2007

GB Women competed in the Mechellen tournament over the weekend 23rd/24th June.

A development team also participated and a big THANK YOU goes to Andy P, who took time from his already busy weekend, to support the team in their games.

The A team had a successful first round winning all their games:
v France U21 3:2
v Germany 5:3
v GB B 7:3
v Iran 4:3
v Italy 3:0

The most promising result being against Germany, who GB haven't beaten since the European final in 2005. Iran caused a few problems and are a team to watch for the World Championships next year.

Great Britain once again met the Netherlands in the semi-final. Having had two strong performances aginst them in Charleroi, confidence was high but yet again the Dutch seemed to play with drive and determination that they only find when competeing against Great Britain!! It was a very competative game with GB taking the leading goal followed by the Dutch equalising.... could GB hold on to a lead before the final whitle... unfortunately not the Dutch equalised for the 5th time forcing extra time. After golden goal 3 minutes the score was still 5:5, in the second half with only seconds remaining it looked like a penalty shoot out was on the cards, unfortunately the Dutch took the upper hand and found the net to take the win 5:6.

Great Britain once again found themselves playing the French. Would they repeat their performance from last year and fall apart under the disappointment or had lessons been learnt, mistakes improved. As always a scrappy, hard fought game ensued with Great Britain winning 1:0

At this point in the season the team will take heart from this performance... a win against Germany, a win against France and a very close game against the Dutch. The situation in International Women's polo still remains where the medals will be shared between these four nations.... making for an exciting, close European Championship in France in September.
